Did you know the leading cause of home fires are kitchen fires?
Approximately 180,000 home fires per year are due to cooking related activities and most of the fires are due to unattended cooking. Here are some simple tips to keep you and your home safe from cooking and kitchen fires:
-STAND BY YOUR PAN!! Always stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling and make sure the handles to any pot or pan are turned to the back to avoid risk of pans being knocked over.
-KEEP IT CLEAN! Accumulation of grease and food can catch on fire easily, make sure to clean stove top and oven regularly. As always, keep any flammable objects away from any heat producing appliance.
-NO KIDS ALLOWED! Never leave children unattended in the kitchen while cooking. Keep children away from all cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of 3 feet around all cooking appliances to ensure their safety.
-MICROWAVE WITH CARE! Always plug microwave directly into wall and always use microwave- safe containers.
-SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! Make sure to have a working smoke alarm near the kitchen to alert you if a fire does happen in the kitchen.
