Over the history of the fire department we have been entrenched in our traditional model for operations on the fire ground. In the past few decades we have seen a substantial decrease in the volunteer firefighters within our organization. In order to be effective with the delivery of our services changes were needs in the way we conduct our day-to-day operations.
Previously, we operated as four independent fire companies. Each of the four companies had their own Fire Officers consisting of an Assistant Chief, Captain and Lieutenant. Over time it has become more apparent that it was becoming more difficult to fill vacancies for Fire Officers as well. These companies had limited manpower at their fire stations and it was becoming apparent we were duplicating our efforts at some of the companies.
The career firefighters work a four group system consisting of a Captain and Lieutenant along with five firefighters. Volunteer firefighters and Officers were merged into one of the four career groups so that there would be consistency in the delivery of services and training programs. Each group was assigned to a specific operational task and fire station that would be under their direct supervision. One group has the responsibility of Ladder Company operations, one group has Engine Company operations, one group has Rescue Company operations and the last group has Special Operations.
We also assigned each group a specific fire station that they would be responsible to maintain and make sure the fire apparatus is readied and operational. Group 2 was assigned to the training of our recruit firefighters and maintaining the special operations equipment the Gates Fire District currently has in its inventory. As this new model continues to evolve we are positioned to evaluate this effectiveness and be ready to refine any concerns that may arise as we move forward. Attached is the Operational Command structure which will give you better detail on how this new Operational Restructuring system will be beneficial to our firefighter and the community we serve.
Changes to our Command Structure can be seen above, and those assigned on our Line Officers page!
