The Gates Fire District takes a proactive approach to life safety and property conservation based on three principles: Education, Prevention and Protection. Our Mission is to provide a safe environment for our town’s citizens and visitors.
This self-inspection checklist is an educational tool for business owners and managers to help guide them and ensure the safety of their employees and visitors. This checklist should not be considered a replacement of an official inspection. Some of these items are based on common fire code violations typically found in most businesses.
BUILDING INTERIOR
- All exit doors shall be free of obstructions and unlocked during business hours when occupied
- Aisles and exits shall be free of obstructions
- Fire doors shall not be propped open and are self-closing and latching
- Exit lights shall be operational
- At least one accessible fire extinguisher shall be located within (75) feet travel distance of all portions of the building which is clearly labeled and free of any damage
- Combustible material shall not be stored in exit paths, under stairs, above ceilings, or in mechanical or electrical rooms
- Storage is maintained at least (2) feet below the ceiling
- A clear space of (36) inches shall be maintained in front of electrical panels
- Extension cords shall not be used in place of permanent wiring
- Fire alarm panel shall be in normal or standby conditions
- No openings in ceiling or fire walls
- Sprinkler risers shall be clear of debris and shall have easy access
BUILDING EXTERIOR
- Address numbers shall be at least (4) inches and visible from the street
- A least a (3) foot clearance shall be maintained around the fire hydrant
- Fire department connection (FDC) has a (3) foot clearance around connections and caps are in place
- Fire lanes shall be properly marked
- Dumpsters shall be kept at least (5) foot away from the building
- Up to date keys in the Knox Box (where applicable)
INSPECTIONS AND TRAINING
- Fire sprinkler systems shall be inspected quarterly (where applicable)
- Fire alarm systems shall be inspected annually (where applicable)
- Fire extinguishers shall be inspected annually
- Kitchen fire suppression systems shall be inspected twice annually (where applicable)
- Employees shall be trained in prevention, evacuation, and fire safety annually

This fire evacuation checklist is an educational tool for business owners and managers to help guide them and ensure the safety of their employees and visitors. This guideline gives businesses a clear understanding on what’s expected of them during a true evacuation. The Gates Fire District can assist you in conducting a fire drill so your staff becomes proficient in fire evacuation procedures.
- Identity of the person conducting the drill.
- Date, time, and location of the drill.
- Notification method used and was it heard throughout the bld.
- Number of employees evacuating.
- Problems encountered.
- Time required to complete evacuation including accountability.
- Was building completely evacuated?
- Are fire lanes clear?
- Did all occupants meet at meeting point?
- Did all equipment work properly?
