A board of five fire commissioners governs every fire district in New York State. A commissioner is elected by the qualified voters within the Gates fire district at the annual election, held the second Tuesday of December each year.
A commissioner is elected for a five-year term commencing on the 1st day of January following the election. Commissioners receive no compensation for their duties. The Commissioners oversee administrative activities, including setting the fire tax, budget, apparatus and equipment purchases, building maintenance and repair or replacement, etc. NYS Town Law 176 outlines the responsibilities of the Board of Fire Commissioners.
The Board of Commissioners differs from the Board of Directors. To learn more about the Board of Directors, click here.
