Ladies Auxiliary of the Gates-Chili Fire Department History
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Gates-Chili Fire Department was formed on May 10, 1933.
This year we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary. Although the auxiliary was formed 75 years ago, it has followed the same purpose all these years. To give aid and assistance to those residents of the Gates Fire District and members of the Gates-Chili Fire Department who may be in need, and to furnish refreshments to firefighters while actually engaged in firefighting.
The original charter members of the Auxiliary were Marie Armstrong, Magdelena Brocksberger, Maude Bohn, Georgianna Bonnett Morris, Jennie Converse, Agnes DeReyscher, Sadie Elliott, Helen French, Mae Kern, Nora Kron Hanover, Mae Link, Jean Schuler, Margaret Wrayno, Emma Youngs and Margaret Elliott Tennitty. There are no surviving charter members.
In the past, our main fundraisers have been our Fall Craft Show and Spring Spaghetti Dinner. With the community's help, these two events have been a great success in raising monies to send to various outreach organizations that may need some extra help. We have held a free raffle of a basket with fire protection items at the annual Fire Prevention Open House. We also make community baskets during Thanksgiving season and adopt unfortunate families at Christmas to help brighten their holiday season. For the past years, we have adopted a Firefighter from the Home on the Hudson which we send cards, birthday and Christmas gifts.
The auxiliary is open for membership to wives, mothers, daughters and sisters of firefighters in good standing belonging to the Gates-Chili Fire Department. New members are always welcome.
