Residents learn fire safety tips
Monday night, a refresher course in fire safety was held in Gates. It was a chance for residents to voice their concerns, their fears, and get some questions answered. It comes after what one resident called a very traumatic week. Vanessa Greene and her two sons died after fire broke out in their Poplar Gardens apartment last weekend. Just a few days later, fire broke out again in the same building. Everyone got out safely the second time. The fires prompted the Gates Fire Department to host a fire safety meeting for residents. Victoria Save also attended the refresher course Monday. She said “You know you can teach your children over and over and hope that they would do the right things, but this is a really good thing for them and I think it really helped out a lot.” The meeting focused on the importance of having things like working smoking detectors. Firefighters say a battery was missing from one of the alarms in Greene’s apartment. Firefighters also talked to residents about preventing cooking fires since both fires at Poplar Gardens started in the kitchen. Gates Fire Chief John Merklinger said “The best thing that comes away from this tonight is that no one else gets hurt in a fire or better yet that we never have to go back to that apartment complex ever again.” Gates firefighters sent residents home armed with hopefully, some good information and with worksheets for escape plans in case fire does break out. A fire can go from spark to inferno in a matter of minutes. That’s why firefighters say escape should be a top priority.
